Privacy Policy

Tome is a reading app built to work entirely on your device. This page describes, plainly, what that means for your data.

The short version

There is no account, no sign-up, and no server that Tome talks to about you. The documents you import, the notes and bookmarks you write, and your reading history are stored only in the app's local database and file storage on your device. Nothing in this data is transmitted, synced, sold, or shared — Tome has no backend to send it to even if it wanted to.

What Tome stores

All of the following lives in a local database and local file storage on your device, and is removed if you delete the app:

• The files you import and the metadata extracted from them
• Notes, bookmarks, collections, tags, and favourites you create
• Reading progress and reading history (time spent, sessions, and activity)
• App preferences, such as typography and playback settings

When Tome uses the network

Reading, annotating, and listening to a document never requires a network connection. A small number of features you explicitly choose to use do make a network request:

• Downloading an offline neural voice pack. If you choose to enable the higher-quality offline narration voice, its voice-pack files are downloaded once from the sherpa-onnx project's public GitHub release assets and stored locally. After that download, narration runs entirely on-device.
• Importing a document from a URL. If you paste a link to a file instead of picking one from your device, Tome fetches that one URL to import it.

Neither request sends any of your library, notes, or reading activity — only the request needed to fetch the file itself.

Dictionary lookup

Looking up a word uses your operating system's own dictionary feature (the built-in offline dictionary on iOS, or whatever dictionary/translate app you've installed on Android). Tome hands the selected word to that system feature and nothing else; it does not run its own lookup service.

No analytics, no ads, no trackers

Tome does not include analytics, crash reporting, advertising, or any other third-party tracking software. Nobody, including us, receives a record of how you use the app.

Sharing and exporting

If you use a share or export feature — for example, sharing a file through your device's share sheet, or exporting your library as JSON — that action is initiated by you, and the data goes only to the destination you choose. Tome does not do this on its own.

Children's privacy

Tome does not knowingly collect data from anyone, including children, because it does not collect data at all.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, the date at the top of this page will be updated to reflect that.
